Simple two at a time top down sock pattern

My turn to contribute to the sock knitting pattern world. This is my first pattern, so bare with me and all the feedback possible will make the next one even better.

For this one I am combining links to instruction on how to magic loop using circular knitting needles, providing you with a simple top down pattern, short row heel with wraps, and instructions on how to graft your toe using the kitchner stitch for a seemless toe.

Materials:

100 gms finger weight sock yarn, either in a 100 gm hank or two 50 gm balls
US size 2 circulars, (I use size 3 square needles but I knit tightly, so more important to pay attention to your gauge)
Tapestry Needle

tapestry needle for grafting the toe and weaving in the ends.

Basic Directions:

Preparations:

1. If using a hank, divide into 2 equal parts. I like to wrap my yarn into cakes and pull from the center. I have a ball winder at home but if you don't have one then now is the time to go to your local yarn store. Most local stores have swifts and ball winders and they can help you with making the proper size cakes. If you ask nicely!

2. knit a gauge swatch*, needed so that you can just measure the persons foot or based on their shoe size make a basic sock based on their measurements. most important measurement is from instep to top of ball of foot( or the lowest point where your toes begin.)

cool link with a chart with common measurements: Shoe_size

okay lets start knitting

1. Cast on 64 sts using size 2 needles and yarn from ball one. Make sure this method is kind of stretch, I like the long tail cast on method because it is stretch and leaves a beautiful edge which will be the top edge of your sock.

here is a link to a beautiful PDF pattern with pictures on how to do a long-tail cast on

2. Using the yarn from the other ball, cast on 64 stitches just like in step 1 using the same needle side used in step one two.

3. now lets set up the magic loop. What is magic loop? Visit http://www.knitting-and.com/wiki/Magic_Loop

  1. on the first sock count 32 stitches, push these onto the needle and pull some of the cable out between the two sets of 32 stitches.
  2. Do the same for the second sock but placing the other sock on the other needle.
  3. Make sure the live yarn is handing on the right and in the back.
  4. You are going to be pulling the yarn from the back to knit in the round with a split between the socks. Make sure you are using only the yarn used for each socks otherwise your socks will be knit together

4. Do 2x2 rib for 1 inch.

5. Switch to straight knitting for about 6 inches

6. Time for the Heel.

We are going to do a short row heel.

These are the instructions I use:

short row Heel

but here they are for your convenience without pictures.

Work with only one sock at a time, until I tell you otherwise
  1. Count half your stitches (32 if that is your gauge). These will be your heel stitches.
  2. Slip,knit to 1 before the end.
  3. turn, slip the first stitch, purl to one before the end
  4. turn, slip the first stitch, knit to 2 before the end.
  5. Turn, slip the first stitch, purl to two before the end.
  6. Keep Going like this, turning, slipping the first stitch, and knitting to 3 before the end, than 4, than 5, and so on and so forth, each time you’ll be leaving a stitch behind and having less and less stitches to knit. Keep going until you’ve got 10 stitches
  7. Ok, so.. You should be ready to do a knit row. Slip the first stitch, knit to one stitch before the gap
  8. Slip the stitch before the gap onto the right hand needle, pick up the bar running between the gap and put it on the right hand needle
  9. Knit the slipped stitch and the picked up bar together
  10. And thats how you close a gap on the right side. Now turn, slip the first stitch, and purl to one stitch before the gap
  11. Slip the stitch before the gap, pick up the bar running between the gap, and put it on the right hand needle
  12. Purl the slipped stitch and the picked-up bar together
  13. Keep going like that, Turning, slipping the first stitch, knitting to the stitch before the gap, slipping it, picking up the bar, and knitting them together, until you’ve closed all the gaps
7. now work on sock number 2 heel.
8. Working on both socks again
9. Work plain knit socks. (If these are for you keep trying them on until you get to where your toes begin. ) knit for about 6 inches.
10.per 32 set: knit 1 Decrease, knit across until 3 stitches remain, decrease, knit 1 until you have a total of 24 stitches left for each sock.(12 on both sides)
11. Graft your toes and weave in the ends!

How to graft your toe using live stitches:

Knitty has a great tutorial on how to graft using the Kitchener stitch which will give you a seamless toe.

here is the link: grafting

Okay so I am currently knitting these socks, I will update with pictures as I go If you do this pattern or would like to add something please contact me.

Felt, leather, and Hot Apple Cider

I am participating in a birthday swap. My buddy lives in Austrailia. She is a crocheter. I decide to take this opportunity to teach myself to felt my knitting.

So I knitted a simple 3 striped bag using Knitpicks Wool of the Andes. I also used a knobby knitter to make 2 six inch handles. I then seamed up the bag and securely placed the handles on. I then placed the knitting in a mesh laundry bag. I put my washer to hot/ cold, small load. I placed 3 pairs of pants. I let the washer fill up and then placed the mesh bag in the washer. I then check up on my knitting every 5 minutes. I had to fill up the washer once, it took about 30 minutes of aggitation to get it to perfection. I then stuffed a book into the bag that just stretched it a little. The bag is now about 1/2 the width, and 1/3 the length of the orginal knit bag. I took it outside and let it dry in the sun.

So my friend had a falling out with his girlfriend. His girlfriend was cheating on her husband with him. And he was told that she was only with him for his insurance....well that's another story. He sold me her leather gloves, and HJC small helmet, for half price $80. Both of which fit me perfectly. He also gifted me the small jacket for free. So I have been riding passanger on his motorcycle for the past week. May I say AWESOME. It is such a great mind release. The wind blowing past, and a experienced rider to make sure my inexperienced butt doesn't get hurt. He says I am very intuitive rider and not his worst rider.

MIL problems:
My MIL called and told me she wanted to pick up the girls for a walk and time at a park. I confronted her and said that I would not let her see the girls in that capacity until she apologized for calling me a "Bi***." Instead of apologizing, she told me that I was actig like one. She had refused to let me look through My husband and mine papers that were collected from my ex-husbands house. I need to find some papers to file my taxes. And instead of let me go through it she has reused to let me come and look. She says she is trying to help me but her help is not helping but causing me to have to file for an extension for my income taxes. She then stared to say that this was all my fault. I had stolen her son away and that it is my fault he is now in jail. She even went so far as to accuse me of cheating on him. I yelled I never cheated, and then hung up on her. It hurts me so much but I just think she is selfish and trying to blame anything on others.

Hot Apple Cider:
I have found a great new local place called the Yellow Deli. It is open 24/5 and my favorite thing on the menu is Hot Apple Cider. Kind of a kooky place but it still serves awesome food, has great atmosphere, and very polite service staff.

Knitting, crocheting, and a new dog

Projects completed since last post:
  • skinny scarf for SB

  • Skirt

  • sweater

  • amigurumi jack skelington

  • lace shawl

I have been a pretty busy girl. Working at the humane society has not been easy but has been so rewarding. I actually got employee of the month for the month of February. So all those staying late and getting early does pay off.

So bad news first, my husband is in jail. Unfortunantly, I have been unable to keeps up with the bills and have had to forgo paying the debt he incurred only in his name. I feel bad because i wantted to do this for him but can not. I had an abcess tooth that is costing me 2800 dollars. And now have another additional monthly pay off. which would have gone towards his bills. So i got to get the divorce papers started so that he can figure out how to deal with his debt. I love him but will never let him hurt me again.

Some good news, I adopted a dog from the shelter. Her name is Spinner. She is a two year old black pug. She does have some medical issues that I am currently dealing with such as two compressed disk in her back from a unknown injury. Also possibly has a rare pug disorder called Pug enchephalitis.

Pug enchephalitis, also known as PDE is a mostly unknown disease. Enchephalitis means inflammation of the brain. Symptoms of PDE are seizures, walking in circles, pressing head against people, walls, or, furniture, staggering gait, and neck pain. The first sign is a change in behavior as small as not wanting to get up from a chair.

About my girls, they are getting so big, so grown up so fast. It seems like yesterday they were little and being carried in my arms. SaraBeth has been enjoying Kindergarten. She had to get glasses because she has exotropia, or an strabismus. more commonly known as cross eyes but in her case her eyes go outward. This leads to one eye developing faster over the other and leading to a "weak" eye. Megan is doing good. She is so smart and wants to take ballet lessons.
